Timing Chain at TDC
Chain installed — cam gear and crank gear aligned at Top Dead Center (Cylinder #1)
Marks 1 and 3 are CARVINGS on the cam gear — Mark 2 is a HOLE on the crank gear
Mark 1 — Cam Gear (top carving): A CARVING etched into the cam gear near 12 o'clock. At TDC, this carving points straight up.
Mark 3 — Cam Gear (second carving): A second CARVING on the cam gear, lower on the face. This aligns with the hole on the crank gear below.
Mark 2 — Crank Gear (hole): A small HOLE on the crank gear (not a carving). At TDC, this hole points up toward the cam gear carvings.
All three marks must be in these exact positions for TDC (Cylinder #1). Marks 1 and 3 = carvings. Mark 2 = hole. If any are off, timing is wrong — do not start the engine.

Cam Thrust Plate: The bronze triangular piece bolted to the block. Controls cam endplay. Must be installed before timing set goes on.
Crank Snout: Gear slides onto this with key aligned, dot facing up (12 o'clock).

Oil Windage Tray
Prevents oil aeration as the crankshaft spins

Windage Tray (yellow): As the crankshaft spins, it dips into the oil. Without this tray, the spinning crank whips oil into froth. The tray blocks the splashing.
Why it matters: Air getting into the oil causes foaming. Foamy oil does NOT lubricate properly — it can and will cause bearing damage, rod knock, and engine failure.
Oil Pickup Pipe (green): Sucks oil from the bottom of the pan and feeds it to the oil pump. Must be submerged in oil at all times.

Valvetrain — Lifters and Rockers
Lifters allow oil to pass through and lubricate critical engine components
Rocker arms, valve springs, and pushrods (valve cover removed)
Hydraulic Roller Lifters: Sit in the block. Oil flows THROUGH them under pressure to lubricate pushrods, rockers, and valve stems. When a lifter fails, that entire path loses lubrication.
Rocker Arms: Butterfly-shaped pieces on top. Each pivots — one side pushes down on the valve, the other is pushed up by the pushrod.
Valve Springs: Pull the valve closed after the rocker opens it. Weak springs = valve float at high RPM.

Exhaust Side — Manifold to Valvetrain
Which lifters connect to the headers vs intake
Exhaust valves and manifold (yellow) — Intake valves (green)
Exhaust Valves (yellow): Connected to the exhaust manifold/headers. They open to let burnt gases out of the cylinder and into the exhaust system.
Intake Valves (green): Face the center of the V (toward the intake manifold). They open to let the air/fuel mixture INTO the cylinder.
LS Valve Order (front to back): E - I - I - E - E - I - I - E. Important for cam swaps or lifter replacements.

Fuel Rail and Coil Packs
Gas flows through the fuel rail to each injector
Fuel rail (yellow) — delivers fuel at 55-62 PSI to each injector
Fuel Rail (yellow): Gas flows through here under pressure (55-62 PSI). Each injector sprays directly into an intake port.
Coil Packs: The cylindrical units next to the rail. Each fires a spark plug — one coil per cylinder, no distributor on Gen III LS.

Intake Manifold
Air and fuel enter the engine through here
Intake manifold (yellow) — distributes air and fuel to all 8 cylinders
Intake Manifold (yellow): Sits in the valley between the two heads. Distributes air and fuel to all 8 cylinders through individual runners.
Throttle Body Opening: The rectangular opening at the rear where the throttle body bolts on. Air enters here, gets metered by the MAF, and distributed to all cylinders.
Always verify: Rotate the engine 2 full turns by hand after installing the timing set. The dots should realign at TDC. If they don't, the chain jumped — redo it before starting the engine.
